EU to look into tech export rules for China
European Commission Vice President for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova (pictured) told the Financial Times (FT) on Tuesday that the European Union will scrutinize its regulations on exporting what she described as sensitive technology to China and other countries with authoritarian leadership.
"Technology is currently at the heart of geopolitical competition and the EU wants to be a player, and not a playground ... And to be a player, we need a united EU position, based on a common assessment of the risks," Jourova stressed. Still, she noted that the bloc will not make a full examination before taking any steps as it seeks to "remain an open and predictable global partner" and not base its decisions on prejudice.
Jourova's comments came after the European Commission opened an anti-subsidy investigation of China's electric vehicle (EV) exports.
