EU to sanction exports if Russia advances further - Dombrovskis

European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis stated in an interview on Wednesday that the European Union would be ready to impose a second combination of sanctions in case Moscow decides to move its troops beyond the territories currently controlled by the Donbas separatists.

"Russia decided to go for a major escalation of this conflict by the recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics and clarifying that they mean this in the territory of not what is actually controlled by the so-called republics, but the entire Donbas territory, so we are facing a major escalation," Dobrovskis noted.

Responding to the nature of the prepared sanctions package, Dobrovskis stated that it would contain mostly economic constraints, such as export controls. He also underlined that such a move would not be without consequences for the European economy, but that it is truly necessary if the EU is to contribute to maintaining "the broader security architecture" in the region.
