EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan resigns

European Commissioner for Trade Phil Hogan (pictured) confirmed on Wednesday he has resigned from his position amid the controversy regarding his recent trip to Ireland, where he attended a dinner with 80 other guests despite the restrictions on social gatherings imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I recognize and appreciate the devastating impact of COVID-19 on individuals and families, and I fully understand their sense of hurt and anger when they feel that those in public service do not meet the standards expected of them," his statement read. "As a public representative, I should have been more rigorous in my adherence to the COVID guidelines."

Hogan also stressed the importance of the European Union as the "global leader" at "a time when the global economy faces significant challenges and turbulence" and that the bloc must remain "at the heart of the multilateral system of open, fair and rules-based trade."
