EU urges 'maximum restraint' over tanker attacks

The European Union called on Friday for "maximum restraint" in the aftermath of the attacks on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

"We are gathering more information and we are assessing the situation," a spokeswoman for the EU's foreign service said. "We have said repeatedly that the region doesn’t need further escalation, it doesn’t need destabilization, it doesn’t need further tension and therefore we call for maximum restraint and to avoid provocations," she told reporters.

Earlier, the United States accused Iran of being behind the attacks, releasing a video allegedly taken after the attack on two tankers, which supposedly shows a boat belonging to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the tankers. However, Tehran categorically rejected the accusation.
