EU: Vaccinating 70% of adults by late summer 'achievable'

European Commission's Director-General for Health and Food Safety Sandra Gallina estimated on Tuesday that the goal of vaccinating 70% of EU citizens over the age of 18 against the coronavirus by late summer is "achievable, but vigilance is required." She added that 225 million COVID-19 vaccine doses will be needed to reach this goal.

Gallina made the remarks before the European Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee, following delays in deliveries by AstraZeneca. She stated that the Commission "remains unhappy" with the company, which "has even not delivered a quarter of the vaccines contracted by the EU." She explained AstraZeneca was scheduled to start delivering shots in December 2020, but it did not provide enough data on time, delaying emergency authorization from EU regulators. Meanwhile, the first doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine should arrive in mid-April, Gallina said.
