EU wants to protect trading bloc, not Belfast deal - Foster

Northern Ireland's First Minister Arlene Foster criticized on Friday the European Union, asserting that the bloc is trying to protect its own interests in regard to trading, without giving much thought to the Good Friday Agreement.

"What they are only interested in is protecting their bloc. They're not interested, as they claim to be, in protecting the Belfast agreement. If they were, they would not be taking the action that they are taking," Foster said to BBC radio.

The European Commission announced the day before that the bloc is preparing "infringement proceedings" against Britain for breaching the Brexit agreement with respect to the North Ireland protocol.
