Euro area retail sales rise 2.7% in March

The seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade in the Eurozone climbed 2.7% in March compared to the previous month, the statistical office of the European Union Eurostat said on Thursday. In the whole European Union, retail sales rose 2.6% month on month.

The retail trade volume jumped 4.6% for non-food products and increased 1% for food, drink and tobacco. On the other hand, the volume of retail trade for automotive fuels fell 2.9%. Among member states, the largest jump in retail sales volume was observed in Denmark, up 22.5%, and the Netherlands, up by 8.4%. Meanwhile, retail sales volume in Croatia fell 4%.

Compared with March 2020 when the first coronavirus lockdowns were introduced, the retail sales index soared by 12% in the euro area and climbed 11.6% in the EU.
