Europe closes higher after central banks lift rates

Stock markets in Europe closed with strong gains on Thursday after both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank increased their respective interest rates by 50 basis points. Investors monitored remarks by central bank bosses and earnings reports by several companies and banks from Europe.

The DAX closed with a 2.16% gain as Siemens Health rose by 8.94%. The FTSE 100 increased by 0.76% at the close with Ocado Group, up 11.30%, as the best performer. The CAC 40 was up 1.26% at the end of trading as Dassault Systemes advanced 12.39%. The EURO STOXX 50 closed 1.67% higher with Adyen adding 13.08%.

The euro was down 0.64% compared to the dollar, going for 1.09180 at 5:35 pm CET. The pound was 0.91% lower than the greenback, trading at 1.22581 at the same time.
