Europe closes higher on US-China trade optimism

Stocks on European markets closed with gains on Wednesday on the back of renewed optimism concerning trade. United States President Donald Trump hinted earlier that he would consider extending the March 1 deadline for reaching a deal with Beijing if the two sides make sufficient progress. The president stated as well that Beijing "very much wants to make a deal," however, he added he is still "not at the point" to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the end of March.

The DAX advanced 0.37% as Continental and HeidelbergCement rose 1.98% and 1.87% respectively. Meanwhile, the CAC 40 gained 0.44% with ArcelorMittal climbing 3.74% as the top performer. In London, the FTSE 100 jumped 0.81%; Smurfit Kappa Group surged nearly 6%.

The euro lost 0.415 against the dollar at 5:40 pm CET, buying 1.1286.
