Europe closes lower amid monetary policy talk

European stock exchanges closed lower on Tuesday as traders analyzed the latest comments made by central banks' policymakers. Natural gas leaks along the Nord Stream pipeline and potential sabotage also grabbed headlines in Europe. Moscow is reportedly expected later this week to confirm the accession of regions in Ukraine the Kremlin's military currently controls, which could lead to even more sanctions by the West.

The DAX closed with a 0.72% loss as Deutsche Bank fell by 4.28%. The FTSE 100 decreased 0.52% at the close, pulled down by United Utilities Group's 8.76% drop. The CAC 40 was down 0.27% at the end of trading, with Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, its worst performer, falling 3.46%.

The euro was 0.11% higher against the dollar, going for 0.96215 at 5:38 pm CET. The pound was up 0.67% compared to the greenback, trading at 1.07640 a minute later.
