Europe closes mostly lower amid economic uncertainty

European stock markets closed mostly lower on Tuesday after data on German consumer confidence showed signs of slight improvement in December. In addition, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde yesterday expressed her opinion on inflation, saying that it has been "too high" for "too long."

Data on Eurozone consumer confidence and business climate, as well as the United Kingdom's housing prices and German consumer price index, are expected to be revealed tomorrow.

The DAX closed 0.16% higher with RWE AG increasing by 3.05%. The CAC 40 lost 0.21% as Pernod Ricard SA decreased by 2.65%. The FTSE 100 fell by 0.07% with Pearson PLC plunging 3.69%. The pan-European Euro Stoxx 50 was down 0.15% as Bayer AG dragged the index down by 3.49%.

The euro was up by 0.31% against the dollar at 5:28 pm CET, selling for $1.09908. The pound increased 0.48% at the same time to go for $1.26908.
