Europe opens mixed as EU leaders meet in Sofia

Equities in Europe opened mixed on Thursday as European Union leaders convene in Sofia, Bulgaria, for the second day of the Western Balkans summit. On Wednesday, European Council President Donald Tusk condemned United States President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw his country from the Iran nuclear deal, questioning Washington's worthiness as an ally in light of recent developments. Meanwhile, Italy's FTSE MIB opened in higher at the start of the session as the Northern League and the 5-Star Movement managed to strike a deal to form a government, ending the 2 and a half months-long political deadlock after the country's general election.

The DAX opened 0.08% in the red with Deutsche Boerse leading the losses as it fell 1.82%. Meanwhile, the CAC 40 rose 0.05% above the flatline, while the FTSE 100 declined 0.20% in the first moments of trading as Paddy Power Betfair dropped nearly 3%. The euro traded flat against the dollar at 9:18 am CET, buying 1.18052.
