EU's Juncker: No intention for Irish backstop to be permanent

At the last press conference this year, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated that the EU has no intention for the Irish backstop to be a permanent solution following the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the bloc.

Commenting on some media reports, Juncker said that he didn't call the British Prime Minister Theresa may "nebulous" during the Brexit discussions. He added that the next issue to be discussed with London is the future relationship after Brexit.

Earlier in the day, May stated that it was clear to her that Brussels wants to have the Brexit deal approved in the parliament, and vowed to seek further assurances from the EU on the Irish backstop aspect of the deal.
