EU's Michel: We must avoid COVID tragedy

European Council President Charles Michel called the coronavirus situation in Europe "alarming" and stressed the need to act to "avoid a tragedy."

"In the face of this exceptional crisis, we must act swiftly and determinedly. Over the past few months, we have witnessed both setbacks and successes. However, the storm is not yet over," Michel said in a newsletter published on Tuesday.

Michel noted that PCR testing should be supplemented with antigen testing which is seen as less reliable but more efficient. Furthermore, he called for the implementation of "effective contact tracing," as well as an EU-wide consensus on "common rules for self-isolation and quarantine."
