Existing Huawei users to keep access to Google services

Google confirmed on Monday that it has barred Huawei from certain updates to the Android operating system, in response to last week's decision by the US Department of Commerce to add the Chinese smartphone maker to a trade blacklist due to Huawei's alleged activities that are contrary to US national security.

"We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications," a Google spokeswoman said. However, existing Huawei devices users will, at least for now, be allowed to use continue to use "Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect."

The American tech giant's compliance with the official order means that in the future, Huawei's devices will be denied access to Google services, including Gmail and YouTube. The Shenzhen-based company has since acknowledged that it has a backup plan drawn up several years ago and that it will seek "remedies" for getting blacklisted by Washington.
