Facebook, Google to face antitrust lawsuits in US - report

Federal and state authorities in the United States are preparing to file new antitrust lawsuits targeting Facebook and Google, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday citing sources close to the matter.

According to the report, officials are investigating whether Facebook abused its power to dominate social media and if Google abused its position to dominate search and advertising. Four lawsuits in total against the tech giants could be filed by the end of January 2021, the sources noted.

Earlier, media reported the Facebook could face charges over its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice sued Google in October over breaking antitrust laws by maintaining monopolies in "general search services, search advertising, and general search text advertising" through "anticompetitive and exclusionary practices."
