Facebook to allow fewer political ads, boost transparency

Facebook Inc will limit the number of political ads on Facebook and Instagram visible to users, aiming to boost transparency on social networks, the California-based company said in a statement released on Thursday. According to the tech giant's press release, the public will be able to see any "ad served to anyone in an easily searchable database," using Ad Library.

"New features will allow people to see fewer political and social issue ads on Facebook and Instagram. We’re updating our Ad Library to increase the level of transparency it provides for people and giving them more control over the ads they see. We plan to deploy the political ads control starting in the US early this summer, eventually expanding this preference to more locations," the statement said.

In October, Facebook found itself under criticism after the company said it would not fact-check political ads. Meanwhile, Twitter officially decided to ban political advertising on October 30.

Facebook's stocks added nearly 1% in the premarket trade following the announcement.
