FB whistleblower urges Congress to intervene into social media crisis

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen testified before the United States Senate on Tuesday saying lawmakers must intervene to tackle the crisis created by the social media giant. She accused her former employer of choosing profits over users' safety.

Haugen had copied thousands of pages of Facebook's internal research before leaving the company in May and leaked it to media outlets before revealing her identity. "Almost no one outside of Facebook knows what happens inside Facebook," she told senators.

She had also filed complaints with the Securities and Exchange Commission, claiming Facebook misled its investors and advertisers by withholding information on how applications operate, including combatting the spread of misinformation.
