FCC proposes ban on equipment deemed nat. sec. threat

The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced on Thursday that it proposed new restrictions on communications equipment made by companies that are deemed a threat to national security.

The regulator stated that in addition to the ability to bar future authorizations for the flagged devices, it wants to be able to revoke existing permits. The agency said that it is also considering revising rules to ban the aforementioned equipment from being granted authorization exemptions.

"The Commission's equipment authorization rules play a critical role in promoting efficient use of the radio spectrum and ensuring that devices comply with technical and other requirements before they can be marketed or imported in the United States," the FCC noted.
