FCC's Carr argues US should ban TikTok

Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, insisted on Tuesday that the United States Council on Foreign Investment (CFIUS) should ban TikTok due to national security concerns.

In an interview with Axios, Carr explained that he doesn't see any path forward regarding TikTok's expansion in the US than a complete ban, primarily due to the way China's ByteDance, which owns TikTok, collects and handles user data.

The federal government has been in talks with TikTok since unsuccessful attempts for ByteDance to divest the social media platform to a US company two years ago pushed by the Trump administration. The latest concerns also relate to the platform's potential for China to influence the upcoming US election.
