FDA allows emergency use of anti-malaria drugs for COVID-19 - HHS

The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed in a statement released on Sunday the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Saturday issued emergency authorization for two anti-malaria drugs for treating patients with COVID-19.

Despite a lack of evidence that drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, commonly used to treat malaria, could help in treating the coronavirus, the FDA decided to greenlight the medication to be "donated to the Strategic National Stockpile to be distributed and prescribed by doctors to hospitalized teen and adult patients," according to the HHS.

The pharmaceutical company Novartis is donating 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate to the stockpile.
