FDA allows pharmacists to prescribe Pfizer's Paxlovid

The United States Food and Drugs Administration announced on Wednesday it has allowed pharmacists to prescribe Pfizer's Paxlovid drug against COVID-19, however with limitations to ensure appropriate patient assessment.

"Since Paxlovid must be taken within five days after symptoms begin, authorizing state-licensed pharmacists to prescribe Paxlovid could expand access to timely treatment for some patients who are eligible to receive this drug for the treatment of COVID-19," Patrizia Cavazzoni from the FDA stated in the release.

Paxlovid was authorized for treating mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in people older than 12 last December and is prescribed to those with a high risk of developing severe disease symptoms.
