FDA approves Moderna, J&J booster COVID shot

The United States Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) authorized on Wednesday the use of COVID-19 booster shots made by Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. Moderna's vaccines can be administered at least six months after the second dose to people over the age of 65, as well as all adults at high risk of severe COVID-19 or those with frequent exposure to the virus. Meanwhile, the Johnson & Johnson jab can be given to all adults at least two months after the initial single-dose vaccine.

The FDA also approved the "mix and match" approach, allowing the use of a different booster shot compared to the original vaccine. It added it is collecting data on the benefits and risks of the use of booster doses in additional populations and "plans to update the healthcare community and public with our determination in the coming weeks."
