FDA warns against usage of hydroxychloroquine

The United States Food and Drugs Administration warned on Friday against the usage of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 outside of the hospital setting or a clinical trial due to the risk of heart rhythm problems.

"Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing COVID-19," the FDA stated, adding these drugs "can cause abnormal heart rhythms such as QT interval prolongation and a dangerously rapid heart rate called ventricular tachycardia."

The FDA has issued the warning after finding out the usage of these drugs could be connected to concerning heart-related adverse events and deaths of patients infected with the coronavirus.
