FEC chair warns Trump after his opponent info comments

United States Federal Election Commission Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub issued a statement warning presidential candidates that receiving "anything of value" from a foreign national is illegal. Her comments follow US President Donald Trump's claims that he would "want to hear" information a foreign country might have about his opponents, without necessarily informing the FBI. Weintraub did not mention Trump by name but commented that she "would not have thought that I needed to say this."

"Let me make something 100% clear to the American public and anyone running for public office: It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a US election... Anyone who solicits or accepts foreign assistance risks being on the wrong end of a federal investigation. Any political campaign that receives an offer of a prohibited donation from a foreign source should report that offer to the Federal Bureau of Investigation," she stated.

Trump drew criticism for his comments both from Democrats and Republicans.
