Fed getting close to tapering talk - Bullard

The United States economy is "getting close" to the point where discussions about altering monetary policy should begin, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard noted on Tuesday, adding that some Fed officials are "more anxious than others" to initiate talks to address the matter.

The US labor market seems "fairly tight," he also told the Financial Times in an interview. The Fed should reassess its jobs market expectations as "anecdotal evidence" are showing that hiring workers is difficult, Bullard suggested.

He also called for alternative economic data indicators to be analyzed when discussing labor market tightness, a move that may give him "more comfort" to begin discussions about altering monetary policy if the Fed "thought the pandemic was over."
