Fed's Kaplan: Not sure if coronavirus data reliable

If it weren't for the novel coronavirus, President of Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas Robert Kaplan stressed on Thursday, he "would be confident about the 2020 outlook."

Apart from the outbreak of the disease weighing on the economy, the central banker said that its impact is difficult to assess because he is "not sure if the data on the coronavirus [coming from China] is reliable."

The central banker echoed a similar sentiment to the one reportedly expressed earlier by White House officials. Apparently, the US government believes Beijing is underreporting the number of people infected with the virus by "at least 100,000" while also trying to cover up the real death toll.
