Finland: No changes to law to please Turkey

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said on Friday no legislative changes will be considered to "please" Turkey's requests, stressing that Helsinki will only extradite individuals requested by Turkey if sufficient grounds exist.

"If the condition for Turkey's ratification of Finland's NATO membership is a change in our legislation, Finland is unlikely to make such concessions," Haavisto told Yle. Finland has pledged not to extradite people facing torture or the death penalty, according to the foreign minister, adding that Kurds in Sweden and Finland should not be "concerned" because the prosecution would be considered only in cases of terrorist activity.

Haavisto emphasized that no changes to the Memorandum will be made "other than what is stated in the document." The day before, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned that Ankara would object to the Nordic countries joining NATO if they did not keep the promises made at the alliance's summit in Madrid.
