First arrest made under HK security law - police

Hong Kong Police Force announced on Wednesday that it has made the first arrest over a violation of the new national security law that came into effect yesterday.

"A man was arrested for holding a #HKIndependence flag in #CausewayBay, Hong Kong, violating the #NationalSecurityLaw," the law enforcement said on Twitter.

After the legislation received approval by the Standing Committee of China's top legislative body, the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's President Xi Jinping signed it into law yesterday. Specifics of the new regulations have been announced later, drawing strong criticism from the Western countries.
