First vaccinations in EU possible in Dec - Von der Leyen

Vaccination against COVID-19 in the European Union could start before the end of 2020, as the first EU citizens could get inoculated in December, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed on Wednesday.

In the COVID-focused part of her speech at the European Parliament, Von der Leyen also warned that, while it is understandable for people to want for the containment measures to be eased, measures relaxed to an inappropriate extent could be counterproductive and may increase the risk of the pandemic's third wave.

Earlier this week, the EU announced its sixth vaccine procurement agreement, securing 160 million doses of Moderna's coronavirus jab candidate.
