Former US presidential candidate Pierre du Pont dies at 86

Pierre du Pont, a two-time Delaware governor and a presidential candidate in the 1988 election, died at the age of 86, his former chief of staff, Bob Perkins, said on Sunday.

Du Pont, who quit his family business and entered politics in 1968, has long suffered from an illness, Perkins explained without elaborating further.

After retiring from politics, Du Pont served as chairman of Hudson Institute, the National Review Institute, and the National Center for Policy Analysis.
