Foxconn CEO to run for Taiwan presidency

Terry Gou (pictured), the founder and chief executive officer of Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group, which supplies Apple Inc., said on Wednesday he will run for president of the self-governing island that China considers its own.

Gou is Taiwan's richest person an estimated net worth of $7.6 billion, according to Forbes. He will first run in the primaries of the opposition Kuomintang party (Chinese Nationalist Party) which is more open to closer ties with Beijing. If he becomes the candidate, Gou will run against incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen from the independentist Democratic Progressive Party.

The executive cited "peace, stability, economy and future" as his values and claimed that he made the decision to run after getting approval from the Chinese sea goddess Mazu. "Today, Mazu told me I should be inspired by her to do good things for people who are suffering, to give young people hope, to support cross-strait peace," he said.
