France adds 65,373 new COVID cases, most since November

The number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 in France grew by 65,373 over the past 24 hours, marking the highest daily increase since early November and the country's second-highest case jump since the pandemic started.

France's health authorities unveiled that the number of fatalities recorded during the same period grew by 248 to reach 93,180. After the latest updates, the country's total case tally climbed to 4,378,446.

Earlier during the day, French Health Minister Olivier Veran noted that the government stands ready to tighten the lockdown imposed in order to curb the spread of the virus if the current measures fail to bring about desired results. Shortly after the update, the French Public Health Agency underlined that the unusually high number of new infections is attributed to tests that were conducted during the past couple of days and have been taken into account today, stressing that this should not be seen "as an exponential increase."
