France fines Google €100M, Amazon €35M

French data privacy watchdog, the National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL), announced on Thursday that it fined Google LLC €60 million, Google Ireland Limited €40 million, and Amazon Europe Core S.a.r.l. €35 million.

All companies were accused of breaching the French Data Protection Act, the agency said, adding that Alphabet Inc.'s subsidiaries were penalized over allegedly depositing cookies without obtaining the users' consent, lack of information for users of the google.fr search engine and a partial failure of the "opposition" mechanism.

Amazon Europe was hit with the fine due to supposed depositing of cookies without the users' consent and lack of information for users of the amazon.fr site.
