France unveils 5 phases of COVID-19 vaccination

French health officials announced on Monday a five-phase plan to roll out the coronavirus vaccine, targeting the most vulnerable population groups as a priority. The French National Authority for Health stated that the main criteria considered were the risk of developing serious symptoms, as well as the amount of exposure to the virus. Advancing from one phase to another would depend on the availability of doses.

Care home residents should be the first to be immunized, as well as the health workers employed in such establishments, amounting to a little under a million people. In the second phase, those over the age of 75 would get the vaccine, followed by those aged between 65 and 74, and medical professionals over 50, totaling some 15 million people. The third phase would target the general population older than 50 and the high-risk younger population. The health authorities would proceed to vaccinate those working with the public in the fourth phase, and finally everyone over the age of 18 in the last phase.
