Free COVID vaccination to start in January - French PM

Vaccination against COVID-19 is expected to begin in January and will be free of charge for every French citizen, French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Thursday.

Castex confirmed that France will have nearly 200 million doses that could be used for the vaccination of about 100 million people, given that two doses of the vaccine are required per person. According to the plan, seniors in elder facilities are going to receive the injections first by the end of January. In February, people at risk due to pathological vulnerabilities will follow, while the rest of the population will have been vaccinated by the end of spring.

It is estimated that the French government will have to pay €1.5 billion to provide the vaccine for free, money that has already been included in the country's social security budget for 2021.
