French inflation down to 5.1% in May
The French Consumer Price Index (CPI) grew 5.1% in May year over year, the country's statistical office INSEE said on Wednesday in its preliminary report. The figure came in lower than the previous month's reading of 5.9%.
Month on month, consumer prices remained "almost stable" as worded in the report, declining by 0.1% in May, a reading lower compared to April's 0.6%. The report accentuated the fall in energy prices, predicting that the rise in food prices and services should decrease, prompted by the fall in transport fees. Finally, the prices of manufactured products "should remain stable between April and May."
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices saw an annual increase of 6% and a minor monthly drop of 0.1% in May.
