French PM announces intl contest to rebuild Notre Dame

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced on Wednesday that an international architectural contest will be organized to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral's iconic spire, which was completely destroyed in a massive fire earlier this week. Speaking following a special Cabinet meeting, Philippe said that the purpose of the competition is to give "Notre Dame a spire adapted to techniques and challenges of our times."

The French prime minister added that the authorities could not yet provide an estimation of the total cost of the renovation work, but stressed that the "this is obviously a huge challenge, a historic responsibility."

Yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his wish to rebuild Notre Dame in five years and make it "even more beautiful." Earlier today Macron's appointee for raising funds for national heritage said that €880 million ($995 million) has been raised so far for the reconstruction of the landmark cathedral, following large donations from domestic and international companies including Total, Kering, LVMH, L'Oreal and Apple.
