Frost: UK, EU still want negotiated solution

Britain's Chief Negotiator of Task Force Europe David Frost stated on Friday after his meeting with European Commission Vice-President for Interinstitutional Relations Maros Sefcovic that both London and Brussels "would still like to find a negotiated solution" on the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol from the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

However, "the gap between our positions is still significant," and the United Kingdom is "ready to use Article 16 to protect the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement if other solutions cannot be found," Frost tweeted. "Technical discussions will continue next week and we will meet again next Friday," he concluded.

Earlier this month, both sides called for a "durable" solution for Northern Ireland, with Sefcovic urging "get[ting] this crucial issue across the line."
