G7 calls for COVID origin probe in China to continue

The G7 called on Sunday in its communique after the Cornwall summit for "a timely, transparent, expert-led, and science-based WHO-convened Phase 2 COVID-19 Origins study including, as recommended by the experts' report, in China." The members also urged "strengthening transparency and accountability, including reiterating our commitment to the full implementation of, and improved compliance with" international health regulations, which also involves "investigating, reporting and responding to outbreaks of unknown origin."

The G7 also agreed to provide at least 870 million doses of coronavirus vaccines over the course of the next year. "At the same time we will create the appropriate frameworks to strengthen our collective defences against threats to global health by: increasing and coordinating on global manufacturing capacity on all continents; improving early warning systems; and support science in a mission to shorten the cycle for the development of safe and effective vaccines, treatments and tests from 300 to 100 days," the communique stated.
