Gazprom to finish Nord Stream 2 in case of US sanctions

Russian Deputy Minister of Energy Anatoly Yanovsky stated on Thursday that Gazprom will be able to complete the construction of Nord Stream 2 on its own in case Washington imposes sanctions against companies currently working on it, TASS reported.

During a conference, Yanovsky said that state-owned gas and oil industry giant has the financial means to offset the potential withdrawal of subcontractors currently laying the offshore pipeline.

The construction of Nord Stream 2 is ongoing despite condemnation by the United States and the European Parliament. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov blasted pressure the US for impeding the project. Nord Stream 2 is expected to be operational by the end of 2019 and should provide Western European countries, mainly Germany, with the additional 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
