German 5G bidders should exclude foreign influence - CDU

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) said on Saturday the bidders for German 5G rollout contracts must guarantee that the network will be secure and excluded from foreign influence. Some members of the CDU proposed to exclude Huawei Technologies from this decision but, speaking at the Party Congress, Merkel said she wants this motion to be a standard for everybody. This proposal also said that the parliament should be directly involved in decision making regarding the 5G network.

Norbert Roettgen, the head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee said: "It must be clear: we can't entrust the German 5G network to the Chinese state, the Communist leadership." He also added that this is a question of "national security and European ambition."

Huawei reacted on Friday to the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decision to ban the use of federal funds to buy equipment from the Chinese company, stating the move is "unlawful."
