German inflation surges to 5.2% in November

The consumer prices in Germany soared by higher-than-expected 5.2% on a yearly basis in November, according to a preliminary report published by the Federal Statistical Office on Monday. The monthly inflation declined by 0.2%.

The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices made an annual jump of 6% and a 0.3% increase month-on-month. The inflation surge was attributed to so-called "base effects" from 2020 prices lows, as well as temporarily lowered taxes and the drop in the price of petroleum products.

The final results are due to be published on December 10.
