German Navy head offers resignation after Crimea comments

German Navy Inspector Kay-Achim Schoenbach announced on Saturday he has offered his resignation to Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht after he stated, while giving a speech at Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), that it is his opinion Crimea "will never return" to Ukraine.

"I have just asked the Federal Defense Minister to release me immediately from my duties as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy. The federal minister granted my request," Schoenbach said in a written statement.

The news comes the day Lambrecht stated Germany will not be sending weapons to Ukraine at the moment as it believes it is necessary to de-escalate the tensions between Kiev and Russia. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described Berlin's attitude as "disappointing."
