German Social Dems defeat Merkel's party in federal election

Germany's center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) won the nation's federal election, beating outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU), the electoral commission revealed in its preliminary results released early on Monday.

"People checked the box for the SPD because they want there to be a change of government in this country and because they want the next chancellor to be called Olaf Scholz," party leader Olaf Scholz (pictured) said after the results were announced.

The SPD scored 25.7% of the votes, topping the conservative Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union bloc by a mere 1.6%. Due to the slim margin of victory, the SPD will have to unite with other parties to form a government, leaving the possibility for the second party in line to end up in charge in case the Social Democrats fail to form a coalition.
