Germany backs France, warns of US trust loss

Germany backed France by criticizing the United States for negotiating a security pact in secret with Australia and the United Kingdom, consequently costing Paris a lucrative defense deal. The failed deal made France's relations with Australia "very difficult," according to a top French official.

"Lost trust has to be rebuilt - and this will obviously not be easy. But we want to make a constructive contribution," Germany's European Affairs Minister Michael Roth (pictured) said on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for the European Union to overcome its differences in order to speak in a unified voice on matters concerning members.

After European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU foreign ministers also expressed solidarity with France. As a clear signal of the bloc's allegiances, EU ambassadors postponed preparations for an inaugural trade and technology council with the US, that was meant to advance the transatlantic alliance further.
