Germany introduces five-day lockdown around Easter

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that the country will introduce stricter COVID-19 containment measures during the five days around Easter.

During a press conference after the meeting with the state leaders, Merkel described the period from April 1 to April 5 as "quiet days," and explained that the limit for social gatherings during the time will be set at 5 people from 2 households. She also urged people to stay at home during the prolonged Easter holiday and invited them to refrain from traveling.

Merkel attributed the increase in new COVID cases to the spread of the virus variants and noted that the relaxation of measures has to be put on hold in areas where the incidence rate has reached 100 cases per 100,000 people on a weekly level.
