Germany stops issuing new arms exports permits to Turkey

Germany decided on Saturday to stop selling weapons to Turkey in response to the ongoing Turkish offensive against the Kurds in northern Syria, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said, according to the German Bild newspaper.

"In light of the Turkish offensive in northern Syria, the German government has decided to stop issuing permissions to sell any military equipment that can be used by Turkey in Syria," Maas said, failing however to say whether Berlin would stop selling armament to Ankara altogether.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced earlier that is has captured the key position in the border area where it is undertaking military intervention for the fourth day in a row, defying warnings about severe sanctions. So far, over 70,000 people are have been displaced from the conflict zone, according to the United Nations.
