Germany urges US to abandon Nord Stream 2 sanctions - report

The German government has called on the American Congress to reject plans to impose sanctions over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, claiming such a move would "ultimately damage transatlantic unity," Axios reported on Sunday citing a document sent by Germany.

In the document, Germany insists that Nord Stream 2 currently presents "no threat to Ukraine as long as reasonable gas transit is ensured" and claims introducing sanctions would mark a "victory for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin" since it would divide Western allies.

Earlier, the US imposed additional sanctions related to the pipeline, while reports claimed US President Joe Biden is seeking to remove Nord Stream 2 sanctions through a new defense bill.
