Gibraltar, fishing yet to be resolved in Brexit deal - EU

The European Union and the United Kingdom have yet to resolve the issues of Gibraltar and fishing rights before the crucial European Council summit on Sunday, an EU official confirmed on Thursday. The official added that "the ball is now in the court of EU member states" when it comes to the text of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

At the same time, the European Commission stated that "there are ideas" on how to solve the issue of Gibraltar, a point of contention between Britain and Spain. The commission added that its President Jean-Claude Juncker is set to meet with May on Saturday afternoon in Brussels in a last-ditch effort to overcome their differences.

In the political declaration on future EU-UK ties which was approved earlier today, there is no mention of the status of Gibraltar, while the document expresses the intention of both sides to find a new fishing rights agreement by July 1, 2020.
